Nanluoguxiang

Nanluoguxiang is located in the city center of Beijing. It is an alley that combines the petty-bourgeois atmosphere and the charm of old Beijing. It is also one of Beijing’s fashion landmarks.

Nanluoguxiang

Situated in the northwest of Dongcheng District, Mao’er Hutong links Nanluoguxiang in the east and connects Di’anmen Outer Street in the west. Before known as the Mao’er Hutongin Qing Dynasty, it was the place where Zitong Temple and Wenchang Palace were located during the Ming Dynasty. Wenchang Palace was used to consecrate Emperor Wenchang, the Star of Wisdom and a deity of the literary according to Chinese myths and legends. Now, on the site of Wenchang Palace, the Mao’er Hutong Primary School stands. The Yards 9 and 11 in Mao’er Hutong constitute the Keyuan Garden, one of the most representative private gardens in Beijing. The Yards 35 and 37 are the former residences of Wanrong, the last empress of the Qing Dynasty. In addition to Wanrong, this hutong also was home to lots of celebrities, such as Hong Chengchou, a general in the Ming Dynasty, and Feng Guozhang, a key Beiyang Army general in early republican China.

The Bell and Drum Tower

The Bell and Drum Tower is located at the northern end of Beijing’s north-south central axis. As the timekeeping center of the capitals of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it is one of the iconic buildings of the ancient capital of Beijing and has a long history.

Skewed Tobacco Pouch Street

Just a hundred meters south of Beijing’s Drum Tower, one of the capital’s oldest hutongs (traditional alleyways) is easy to overlook. A narrow alley off a busy road, it’s rather innocuous when there are no crowds of people clamoring at its entrance. Yandai Xiejie hutong’s name translates to “smoking pipe” street, a remnant of the Qing dynasty days when the street was filled with stores selling tobacco and pipes.

Yinding Bridge

It is said that in the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, the emperor made a tour in plain clothes and came across obstruction caused by the river. A minister Heshen immediately ordered to fetch silver ingots from the palace and pave a road over the river for the emperor. Therefore, it was called Yinding Bridge since “Yinding” means sycee, a type of ancient Chinese money.

Shichahai

It is located in the Xicheng District of the central city, adjacent to the central axis of Beijing city. With a water area of 336,000 square meters, it is the only open scenic area with open water in the inner city of Beijing, and is also the largest and most complete historical district in Beijing. It occupies a unique position in the planning and construction history of Beijing. Shichahai includes the three waters and adjacent areas of Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai (also known as Jishuitan). To echo the “Front Three Hai”, they are commonly known as the “Back Three Hai”. Shichahai is also written as “Shichahai” (“Ten Temples Hai”). The area was originally surrounded by ten temples, hence the name.
